About the movie

In its initial stages, Fox's Raising Hope appeared as a common sitcom featuring an eccentric family attempting to raise a baby. However, the show transcends this stereotype by offering a unique blend of heartfelt moments and dark humor that appeals to audiences. The Chance family, a group of impoverished misfits, revel in the modest pleasures of life due to their limited financial resources. Virginia (Martha Plimpton) and Burt Chance (Garret Dillahunt) hold down menial jobs while caring for their adult son Jimmy (Lucas Neff).

They cohabit with Virginia's mother Maw Maw (Cloris Leachman), despite her reluctance, as she suffers from dementia and is often unaware of her own will or the current decade. Jimmy, content with his life of idleness, experiences a turn of events when he encounters a serial killer. Surprisingly, he survives the encounter, but nine months later, he meets his daughter, Princess Beyonce. The mother is on death row, and the baby is placed in Jimmy's care.

Realizing that his life was directionless, Jimmy decides to raise Hope as a means of finding purpose. He renames her Hope and embarks on the journey of fatherhood with reluctant assistance from his family. The series maintains an undercurrent of sinister humor due to Jimmy's serial killer girlfriend, unabashed jokes about poverty, Maw Maw's mental health issues, and more. The bluntness of these jokes is tempered by the affectionate nature of the Chances as they grow attached to Hope and endeavor to provide her with a better life than they had.

Sabrina (Shannon Woodward), a sweet yet sarcastic girl from a wealthy background, joins the cast as Jimmy's love interest. Raising Hope is an excellent choice for viewers who appreciate unconventional situations and are looking to add an unusual show to their viewing schedule. The strong ensemble cast, endearing infant, and offbeat humor continue to engage fans and attract new viewers to the series. Raising Hope has four seasons (89 episodes) and first aired on September 21, 2010.
